
The result is decided before spraying
Primer, enamel, direct-to-rust and specialist aerosols have different preparation and recoat rules. Follow the exact label and technical data sheet.
Paint cannot restore steel lost to corrosion. Have severe pitting or structural loss assessed before coating.
1. Make the surface clean, dry and sound
Remove oil, silicone, salt, dust, loose rust and failing paint. Key sound glossy coatings as directed.
Galvanized steel, aluminium and unknown old finishes need compatibility checks. Test an inconspicuous area and use an industrial system where exposure demands it.
2. Confirm environmental limits
Cold slows curing; excessive heat can cause dry spray, while high humidity can leave condensation on cool metal.
Use the product's temperature and humidity limits. Provide safe ventilation, remove ignition sources and follow the safety data sheet for PPE.
3. Prepare the can and test the pattern
Shake for the specified time and periodically during work. Test on scrap to reveal a blocked nozzle or colour issue.
Use the labelled distance, start and finish each pass beyond the work, overlap consistently and keep the can parallel.
4. Build controlled light coats
One heavy coat can run and trap solvent. Use a light tack coat followed by even coats at the stated interval.
Keep speed, distance and overlap consistent; rotate narrow sections rather than flooding one face.
5. Do not confuse touch-dry with recoatable
Some products must be recoated within a short window or only after a much longer cure. The wrong timing can wrinkle or soften the film.
Verify primer-topcoat compatibility and allow full cure before assembly, stacking or chemical exposure.
6. Diagnose defects before recoating
Let runs cure, level them, clean and repaint lightly. Dry spray and orange peel often point to distance, speed or temperature issues.
Wrinkling suggests incompatible or mistimed coats; craters suggest contamination. Remove failed film to a sound edge before rebuilding.
7. Treat safety and waste as part of the job
Aerosols are pressurised and many contain flammable solvents. Control flame, sparks, inhalation, eye and skin exposure according to the SDS.
Do not puncture or burn cans. Dispose of paint, contaminated materials and aerosols under local hazardous-waste rules.
